Hedi is the art of painting objects or words all over the body. The design for Hedi itself is divided into two parts; namely Hedi for single people and Hedi for married people, also known as "Hedi Fetok". Hedi for single people most often occurs when mourning at the funeral home, known in Tetun-Terik as "Sae Aifunan". The Hedi process can be done between friends and also for young people who are dating. For those who are dating, when they want to make Hedi on their boyfriends or girlfriend’s body, they must get permission from their parents, and after getting permission, they will enter the house to start the Hedi process. Hedi is most commonly tattooed on the hands and feet, and the objects Hedi uses most often are words such as their boyfriend's or girlfriend’s names, date of birth, birds, eyes, etc.	
The meaning of Hedi is as a sign about someone's life story to be remembered for all time. Sometimes they write the words or names of their boyfriend or girlfriend and also their friend name, so that when they tell about their life story or experiences, Hedi becomes proof of their story.
In ancient times when a woman and a man were going to build a household, they did not use rings but they used "Hedi Fetok" on both hands or both feet of a woman as a symbol that the woman already has a partner. The materials used to make this Hedi process are candles or oil lamps, spoons, and sticks. The process of making Hedi is first to light a candle or oil lamp, put a spoon in the flame of the candle or oil lamp to produce a black soot, then take a stick that has been sharpened at the top and apply it to the black soot. This is then used to pierce the desired body part to create a particular image. This process is very painful and causes bleeding because the stick pierces the body.
Beside from being an art form, Hedi Fetok also saved many women during the Japanese occupation. According to the tradition of the Covalima people, for a woman who has Hedi Fetok it is a sign that the woman is already married and cannot be harassed by other men. For this reason, during the Japanese occupation, most of the young women in Suai Covalima did Hedi Fetok in order to protect themselves from sexual harassment and violence from the Japanese army.
