Barnes S., Palmer, L., Kakuma, R and Larke, B., 2019. Towards an integrated and accessible mental health care system in Timor Leste. In Leach M. and McWilliam A. (eds) 'Routledge Handbook of Contemporary Timor Leste', pp. 1-19. In this chapter, we first explore diverse understandings of health and healing in Timor-Leste and consider how these play out in the context of mental health. We then identify the range of customary and religious faith-based healers and healing practices commonly consulted by patients with mental illness and their families. Finally, we ask, if and how might customary, other religious and clinical approaches to mental health be woven together to improve equitable access to culturally competent and context-appropriate health services.
