Catarina Ximenes is a female healer in a coastal village of Bucoli to the west of Baucau. Her healing skills are handed down through her mother’s family line and she specialises in the cure of cancer (particular breast and throat cancer) and chronic dry cough. She harvests her medicines from three types of trees (one for cancer, two for chronic cough). These cannot be named. They are found in the forest beyond her house towards the coast. She must repay the debt to the spirits of the tree used to cure cancer with a sarong, a cockerel and seven objects (either betel leaves or notes/coins). She must also bury 5 and 7 objects at the base of the trees (betel leaves or coins). Her divination or xray process involves observing the behaviour of an egg balanced atop an old Portuguese coin. She has no link with the formal health system. Patients must come under her sole care for the period in which she is treating them.
